How to Make the Most of Title Tags

Title Tags

When it comes to SEO, there are so many aspects to take into account in order to make it as optimal as possible. Arguably one of the most important aspects, and sometimes overlooked, is that of the title tag.

Think of it like this, in SEO, title tags are essentially like the title of your book, so you ideally want it to tell people exactly what they can expect when they click on your page. Another thing to note is that when ranking your page on an online engine, title tags are one of the most important factors used as a ranking signal. As an experienced SEO company, let’s go through some of the best ways to utilise title tags!

What exactly are Title Tags?

When looking at the results on a search engine, title tags are found in the <head> section of your web pages HTML page.

In your web page, the HTML code appears as <head> <title> Title Here </title> <head> . Your title tags can and usually appear in search engine results, in open browser tabs, social media posts, etc. Ultimately, this means that not only do title tags serve a huge purpose to readers, but  also to search engines. In some cases, if Google doesn’t like your title tag, they would change it to be more optimal to their user needs. This is why it is so important to consider the best practices for title tags so that you’re content can rank higher.

Some of the Best Practices for Title Tags:

With all of this in mind, let’s break down three of the best practices to put in place when it comes to title tags:

  1. Utilise keywords

When using the right keywords, title tags become increasingly optimised! The best way to optimise your keywords is usually to put the most relevant ones right in the title. It is crucial however not to overdo it, as search engines such as Google can easily recognise ‘keyword stuffing’ and will in turn change the title of your web page. Now, in terms of where your keyword is to  appear in the title, there is much debate as to whether it should be at the beginning or the end.

Although, looking at the example below, it’s evident that the main keyword “breed” appears within the first five words for every title on the first page of results.

By this example, it is safe to say that in your title tags, it is a very good idea to utilise keywords and make note of their placement!

  1. Length

Typically, title tags themselves should be between 50 to 60 characters long. If your title is any longer than this, it will likely be cut off in the middle, as the example below shows:

Having a title that consumers cannot fully read at first glance will not only make them less likely to engage with your content, but it is also likely to lower your ranking on the search results page itself. This is also why it is so important to incorporate your keywords into the first few words of  your title, to ensure that it does not get cut off at any point, if your title is on the longer side.

Another note is to avoid using all caps in your title tags, as it takes up more character space!

  1. Try to Avoid Stop Words, and start using Action Words

Some examples of stop words are:

  • A
  • But
  • And
  • So
  • The
  • Was
  • With

Although this list is not exhaustive, and while it is of course not always possible to completely avoid these words, different title combinations will allow for you to use more actions words!

The problem with stop words is that they not only take up space in your title tag, but they also fill up space that could be used for action words.

Action words on the other hand, include:

  • Take
  • Boost
  • Learn
  • Make
  • Get

Words such as these are great to use in your titles, as they help entice users to click-through to your content! Not only that, but it also helps readers know what they can expect by clicking onto your page.
