9 ways to stay happy and healthy as you age

stay happy

One thing that none of us have control over is aging. It happens to us all, and nothing we can do will change that. As we get older, our bodies and minds start to slow down, and we may begin to notice subtle differences in our reactions, mindset, and overall health.

The good news is that there are many things you can do to slow the aging process and make sure you are in the best health during your latter years. Here are 9 ways to stay happy and healthy as you age.

Take a walk

Walking is one of the best exercises you can do and is beneficial for both your body and your mind, so, if possible, you should try and incorporate a 20-minute walk into your daily routine. A brisk walk can aid circulation, help to keep blood pressure down, and is brilliant for your cardiovascular system.

Fresh air can also help you sleep, so if you currently don’t get out of the house very much, it might be time to change that.

Get vaccinated

Our immune systems can get weaker as we age, so our bodies may not be as equipped to fight infection. That’s why it’s worth considering vaccinations for illnesses such as the flu. It can be debilitating even for younger people, so it’s worth getting extra protection if you feel that it would be beneficial.

Similarly, if you are vulnerable, you may benefit from having the Covid vaccine to give you some added protection. It’s always wise to talk to your healthcare provider to find out the options available and discuss any concerns you may have.

Stop smoking

Smoking is one of the unhealthiest and most dangerous habits you can have, so if you still enjoy lighting up a cigarette at regular intervals throughout the day, you must try and stop. Cigarettes contribute to many horrible and sometimes fatal diseases and illnesses, including emphysema, COPD, diabetes, and cancer.

If you are struggling to stop, talk to your doctor and find out what replacement therapies may be available. Regardless of your age, giving up smoking will be the best thing you ever did.

Make adaptions in and around your home

As you age, day-to-day tasks may become harder to accomplish, but certain modifications made in and around your home can make things a little easier. If stairs are becoming hard to maneuver, a stairlift might be exactly what you need, and it will give you the freedom to get around your home without too much trouble. Walk-in tubs are a popular option with seniors and allow you to have a bath without the fear of either falling or becoming stuck.

Another thing to consider is to have a medical alert system set up at home. There are various types available and will give you peace of mind that someone is on the other end of the phone should you run into any difficulties.

Make lots of wonderful memories

What better way to spend the latter years of your life than making more memories with the people you love? Spend time with your family, make plans with your friends, and if you still have lots of things you want to achieve in life, why not make a bucket list? You can note them down in a jotter, or if you are keen to make it a little more formal so that you don’t lose focus, you can buy a bucket list book and keep everything noted in it.

Getting older does not mean your life has to stop, and you probably have more time than ever to fill, so it makes sense to pack in as much as you can.

Get a hobby

Hobbies are a great way to fill your time doing something you love, and there are thousands to choose from, so if you haven’t already got one, it’s worth considering your options. If you fancy doing something active, golf is a popular choice, or why not find out if there are any senior citizen exercise classes or walking clubs in your area?

If you enjoy being creative, there are loads of different crafts which might take your fancy. Hobbies give you the freedom to escape when you most need it and can provide lots of fun too!

Look after your skin

If you want to slow the signs of aging, one of the best ways to do it is to look after your skin. As we age, our collagen levels deplete, and our skin loses elasticity, but keeping it clean and nourished can delay things a little.

Cleanse and tone each day, exfoliate once a week and use a good moisturizer day and night. If possible, use a day cream with an SPF – it will help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Avoid processed foods

Processed meats, in particular, are terrible for our health – so much so that the World Health Organization consider them to be a Group 1 carcinogen – and so should be avoided at all costs.

Processed foods can, over time, have a hugely negative impact on our well-being so instead, try to fill your diet with a range of healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. They are packed with phytonutrients and will help boost your immune system, which, in turn, will help your body fight illness and prevent disease.

Keep an eye on your weight

Excess weight can put lots of strain on your heart and lungs and isn’t great for your overall mood either, so if you could do with losing a few pounds, it could make a big difference to your health and your happiness. Increase your exercise, make healthier food choices, and monitor your daily calorie intake.

Losing weight can be more difficult as we get older, but with a bit of focus, determination, and positive thinking, you should be able to achieve your goals.
